The Volunteer of the Year Award honors an individual who has gone above and beyond to serve trafficking survivors in a volunteer capacity. We honor Lusekelo “Lucy” Mbisa, who has generously supported survivors as they rebuild their lives. Lucy has inspired our clients — as well as our staff — with her tenacity. Lucy spent hours with one survivor, fighting tirelessly to obtain state identification documents and a learner’s permit from the DMV. Lucy refused to take no for an answer and advocated until the survivor had the documents in hand. Lucy also devoted significant amounts of time seeking out opportunities for summer camp – and scholarships – for the young child of a trafficking survivor. She found emergency housing for a survivor who might otherwise have faced homelessness. The survivors she has worked with rave about her kindness, devotion, sense of humor, and remarkable ability to get things done.
